Sins of a Solar Empire

Three days ago, I had a sudden urge to play an in-depth strategy game. Last night I got just that with Sins of a Solar Empire. I played for about 2 hours and from the looks of it I might have made it a tenth of the way through a 'medium' sized match. The game is about conquering outter space, and it is as massive as the black void that engulfs our planet. You take the role of a space commander and spread from planet to planet managing resources, killing enemies, fending off pirates (which can be paid to attack other factions), researching new abilities, building space ship fleets, and conquering the world... erm I mean universe. The game reminds me of Civilization IV with real time combat added in. You can play the game zoomed all the way out and see each of the planets that you control; or you can zoom all the way in and micromanage the battles between your fleet and the enemies. The graphics when you are playing zoomed in are quiet breath taking, space debree even remains long after battles have concluded. I wouldn't recomend this game to the faint of heart, or anyone with ADHD. Expect matches to last a long time, be able to save and walk away from time to time. If you can't do that, you should not play this game.

The Good

  • Potentially hours after hours of different gameplay

  • Three races to play with completely different ships, abilities, etc

  • Breath taking visuals

  • Graphical battle scenes

  • New take on RTS's for me

  • Allows a lot of customization

  • Winning is fun, real fun

The Bad

  • Don't play if you have a short attention span

  • Like Civ IV, things can get hard to manage when you control a lot of territory

  • If you're not good, the computer will beat the shit out of you

  • Steep learning curve

The Ugly

  • Chuck Norris.
